workshop 4 - how are costumes used to enhance the story

here is a link to our workshop: link

Atmosphere - the mood or feeling of a place.
Mood - a feeling.
Location - a place where something is set.
Warm Light - orange, yellow, or blue tinge. makes us feel cozy, warm, welcome.
Cold Light - blue, green, white. makes us feel clean, sterile, modern.
Bright - obvious, feel happy, energetic
Dull - faded/muted light. this makes us feel, boring, sad, lonely, tiresome.
Natural - sun, reflections, moon, stars, lightning, fire. This occurs from nature
Artificial - light bulbs, screens, LEDs, made sources of light, Electricity.
Color pallet - all the colors used in that shot. District - greens, blacks, browns, greys.

Scene Name: District 12
What is happening? Katniss is running through the town to hunt in the woods.
Types of colors/lighting: Cold light, lots of greenery, dull, natural light, sunlight/clouds.
Effect on the viewer: cold, not where you want it to be, back in time, old fashioned, lots of poverty, outdated materials, live closer to the land.
Directors Purpose: Rich vs Poor - who has more privilege, power, and opportunities. They don't have the privilege of technology, no artificial sources of light.
Other techniques: (Settings, costume, color, lighting, music, background) Costumes - greys/blacks coal miners wear these colors because its the same color as the coal and it can get really dirty.

Name scene: Train station at the Capitol
What is happening: the Capitol citizens are waiting for the tributes to arrive.
Techniques: lighting in the Capitol is cold, bright artificial light is coming from light bulbs and electricity. Color pallet - vibrant, vivid costumes, and white/grey buildings.
Effect on the viewer: modern, sets the mood of the scene, excited for the tributes to arrive.
Directors purpose: Rich vs Poor - privilege, power, and opportunity. They have access to technology because the costumes are better. Not poverty in the Capitol. they don't have to work, privileges of being able to go and watch to tribute arrive.

Paragraph -
In the scene at the train station, lighting, and color are used sustainably to show the theme of "Rich vs Poor". In this case, rich means the privileges given to those in the capitol. This demonstrated through the use of bight, cold, artificial lighting, and a modern color pallet of whites and greys for the buildings and vibrant pinks and blues for the clothing. This makes the audience feels like the location is modern and the citizens are excited for the tributes to arrive. The purpose of this was to show that the Capitol has the privilege of technology, they have electricity, trains, and access, to better clothing. This worked well with the use of costumes. The costumes of the Capitol are unique, exquisite, and exotic which shows they have variety and sewing technology than those of people in the districts. This can be juxtaposed to the conditions in District 12 where there is no electricity and the colors and lighting are more natural.

Workshop 3 - hunger games

In the reaping scene, costumes are used effectively to show the theme of rich vs poor. We see this when the people of district 12 are waiting for someone to be chosen to represent their District. The lifestyle of District 12 is reflected in the clothes that they wear. The materials of the clothes have a more easy fabric so it will easier to rip and fall apart. Between Katniss and Effie's clothing, they have dramatic differences between color, material, and how it's worn. There is a difference between opportunity, power, and privilege between district 12and the Capitol. The director did this to make the audience understand how costumes can symbolize the inequality between the capitol and the districts. This symbolism combined with a wide shot of the crowd of D12 and an over the shoulder shot of Effie reveals the lack of opportunity in D12 and the power of the capitol. This aspect can be contested to the character of Effie, she wears bright pink that has another design behind it revealing the opportunity to characters in the capitol.

In this scene Rue's death was unexpecting to the audience as they were unaware she could die so fast throughout the movie. The emotion scene shows how Jennifer Lawrence's character reacts in this situation as if we were in that atmosphere. Katniss gathers up flowers to lay around Rues corpes. Lining them up one by one, color by color, size by size her cheeks are drowning in her own tears. This makes Katniss realize that this isn't pretend anymore.

cotton drill

 What is drill cotton?

Drill has a twit weave which makes very strong, dense medium to heavy weight fabric.

The twit weave means it has very attractive characteristics diagonal  lines on the fabric which adds an interesting texture. Drill is quite similar to denim but is usually dyed and has a smoother appearance.

It can be used as:

  • shirts

  • Heavier weight dressed

  • Trousers

  • Uniforms and workwear

  • Jackets

  • Bags

  • Aprons

  • Home furnishings

Properties in drill cotton.

Cotton drill is a highly used pure cotton fabric with a strong twill weave that follows a diagonal strand appearance.

The fabric soon became a popular material for military uniforms, and, in the United States following World War II, as veterans returned to college campuses, it became popular in casual dress as well.

Workshop 2 - hunger games

H U N G E R G A M E S

What is the significants in the scene?
  • She volunteered
  • A low angle is shown near the end of the scene followed by when the village is looking upwards towards katniss.
  • When the soldiers were taking katniss up to the stage, the camera moves as its walking with them.

Rich vs Poor - Effie trinket is dressed nicely while Katniss is dressed is well worn, run-down cheap clothes, they had the privilege and big attitude, Effie is immune to reaping.

Struggle for power - It shows that Katniss does not get what she wants and isn’t in control, as the Capitol chooses for them/her.

2-3 Sentence - In the reaping scene, we are shown that Effie, shows she thought that everyone was going to be excited about the reaping but instead everyone was depressed and miserable. She kept looking at the crowd as they were laughing or smiling at her when she talked.

Paragraph - In the reaping scene camera angles and shots are used effectively to show the theme rich vs poor. In the scene Katniss volunteers as tribute in place of her sister, to fight in the hunger games. The comparison between the wealth of the capitol represents by Effie and the poorness of Katniss is seen in her in the wide shot of the people gathered at the reaping. A close-up shot of Effie revels quality, colorful make-up, and costume. The wide shot of the crowd is used to that they are forced to show up and stand there. The wide shot also shows a lack of color in the population of District 12s material and costume to shows they are poor.

Commercial Patterns - Textiles

In textiles we've been learning about commercial patterns. At the back there are different types of sizes and list of what was needed for the clothing. We first tried to understand what those things at the back were about, then we measured our body to see what our sizes were. While choosing our project we went with the long skirt.

essay on social studies

Introduction -
Technology has had a massive change compared to ancient history. Such as papermaking, printing, gunpowder and the compass all have had a big impact in the Han dynasty from 206 B.C-220 A.D. The way how people are using technology isn’t how they used them back then. The kind of materials they had back then was all they had so they had to use what was there. Ancient China went to hand made technology to automatic robots.

Early Chinese Compass – 400 BC - MagLabIn China, they have four great inventions. The compass is one of the earliest tools in the world and was invented during the Han dynasty. This navigational tool was used with a copper spoon and lodestone that can move freely. Many airplanes and ships are still using today’s compass for navigational purposes. Today's compass comes in many different shapes and sizes, pocket-size or gyro. The compass allows where to direct even if something is in the way.

History of Gunpowder — Epic FireworksIn china’s history, gunpowder is called ¨Huo Yao¨” meaning flaming medicine. Unlike paper, printing, and  gunpowder were accidental. Alchemists were playing around with chemicals and materials when they mixed sulfur, saltpeter, and charcoal. The benefits of gunpowder were for entertainment. Mainly cultural events required gunpowder. Also, many events were created from gunpowder. The huge improvement of the invention of gunpowder helped build a better society for China. Today's gunpowder firearms are limited primarily to hunting, target shooting, and bulletless.

The first people to invent paper were the Chinese as it was made from the bark of the mulberry tree. They would be broken down into and bashed into a thin sheet. As they knew more about making it, they soon used materials such as hemp rags and fishnets and swaying it around in the water until they got a clump. China's ancient paper was rarely used for maps or to send a message to the other villages. Now, paper had many uses such as toilet paper, packaging, wallpaper, books. Chinese Paper Making | Chinese Paper | DK Find OutScientists turn to ancient Chinese woodblocks to develop new cell-printing technique | Ancient Origins

The earliest form of Chinese printing relied on blocks cut from wood. They would carve out the shape, or written text in the block and copy it onto paper or cloth. Today’s technology lets you print anything from a device to the printing machine.

In conclusion one of the oldest and largest countries in the world, has provided us with different inventions that have changed the way of mankind. Their inventions have impacted us greatly from the inventions of paper, printing ,gunpowder and the compass with many more still to come.

Paragraph -

In the hunger games, directed by Gary Ross, costumes used effectively to highlight the theme of rich vs poor. For example in the Capitol, the costumes show bright vibrant colors, and their type of clothing is posh. Their material is shown to be futuristic to make us understand that the capital is more advance than District 12. The director did this to separate the capitol and District 12 and show how they are and act in different terms. In District 12 the fabric is older because they don't wear dramatic clothes but wear the materials used are natural and well worn. this difference shows that there are privileges to living in the Capitol.
