Testing For simple sugars - the benedicts test
Aim: to test a sample of food to determine whether it contains simple sugars.
Method:
1. place about 2 ml of the sample into a test tube and then add 5 drops of benedicts solution
2. Heat with a bunsen burner until it changes color. do not boil.
Results: as soon as we put heat onto the flame, it started to change color. the color changed orange and it smelt like baby food
Testing for complex sugars - the lodine test
Aim: to test if a sample of food contains complex sugars.
Method:
1. place about 2 ml of the sample in a test tube
2. add 3-5 drops of iodine and mix
Results: The bread changes from brown to blue without any flame
