Workshop 3 - hunger games
In the reaping scene, costumes are used effectively to show the theme of rich vs poor. We see this when the people of district 12 are waiting for someone to be chosen to represent their District. The lifestyle of District 12 is reflected in the clothes that they wear. The materials of the clothes have a more easy fabric so it will easier to rip and fall apart. Between Katniss and Effie's clothing, they have dramatic differences between color, material, and how it's worn. There is a difference between opportunity, power, and privilege between district 12and the Capitol. The director did this to make the audience understand how costumes can symbolize the inequality between the capitol and the districts. This symbolism combined with a wide shot of the crowd of D12 and an over the shoulder shot of Effie reveals the lack of opportunity in D12 and the power of the capitol. This aspect can be contested to the character of Effie, she wears bright pink that has another design behind it revealing the opportunity to characters in the capitol.
