Discrimination has a negative effect on society

What is the difference between prejudice and discrimination?
Prejudice can be a negative feeling towards a person or group based on their lies and expectations. Discrimiantion is when you don't like someone based on groups.
Why does prejudice persist in society?
Groups/individuals have different beliefs and reactions than others.
What examples of discrimination did we see in The Hate U Give? (List as many as you can)
Racism, Identity, Nationality, Groups, family and friends, rivals between schools, Starr’s father, the diner cops
What examples of discrimination did we see in Freedom Writers (List as many as you can)
Racism - Criticism - Age - Nationality - Groups - Gang affiliation
What examples of discrimination did we see in The Help (List as many as you can)
List one specific historic/current example of EACH of these types of discrimination. Include specific details:
Racial - People acting differently around you or saying nasty things about the color of your skin.
Religious - There are many religions, such as Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism.
Gender - 2 genders , boy and girl.
Sexual orientation - Sexual orientation is traditionally defined as including heterosexuality, bisexuality, and homosexuality, while asexuality is considered the fourth category of sexual orientation by some researchers and has been defined as the absence of a traditional sexual orientation.
What is stereotyping?
Where people assume you automatically do something. Thinking that somebody is this or having a negative expectation about them.
What is one example of stereotyping that you saw in each of the three texts we viewed in class?
When someone arrives late and everyone assumes that they came late on purpose, or thinking they were doing this without knowing what actually is going on.

Social identity theory explains that they drive self esteem from a group that they positively identify with, therefore they favor it. They allocate more resources to the in-group to maximize the difference between their in-group and out-groups in order to achieve such identifications
